On Tuesday, January 20th, twelve students from Daegu International School visited our school. We had been conducting an exchange program where nine students from G9 and G10 had interacted with them through online meetings in July and November. When the Daegu students came to our school, all G9 students participated in activities to exchange cultures and communicate with the students from Daegu. After that, the G8 students introduced their learning in the COF class. In the afternoon, all members of the program joined a discussion session and also tried picking oranges. The students planned and prepared for the visit by themselves. They tried to speak in English and sometimes communicated

At our school, we launched the Harmony Beyond Borders project with the aim of fostering an environment where students and staff can learn about diverse cultures, recognize differences, and grow together in a spirit of “co-education” regardless of cultural background. As part of this initiative, an intercultural exchange workshop for faculty and staff was held on Wednesday, January 7, with Ms. Hamanaga and Mr. Masuda from the Hiroshima NPO Center as guest facilitators. Through interactive games, participants experienced moments when their own rules did not apply and when their thoughts could not be effectively communicated. This allowed them to gain a deeper, simulated understanding of the emotions felt by international students

On Saturday, January 24th, we held a “Shima-Oya Hosted Mochi-Making Experience” for G10 students (first-year high school students). In preparation for the event, many residents of the Okushi district, led by the island parents, assisted with numerous tasks such as moving the pestles and mortars and preparing the glutinous rice. Mochi pounding is an important Japanese traditional culture, praying for a bountiful harvest and wishing for the bonds of family and community. However, opportunities to experience it have become rare lately, and many students were experiencing mochi pounding for the first time. The students experienced the pleasant aroma of steamed glutinous rice and the challenge of pounding the rice with

On Wednesday, January 21st, during the third period, we held a “Table Manners Workshop” for Grade 11 students (second-year high school students). This workshop was held as a special class with the cooperation of Compass Group Japan, Inc., which regularly operates our school’s cafeteria. This was the first time for most of the students, and although they were a little nervous, they enjoyed an authentic course meal while learning unfamiliar table manners one by one. As the instructor carefully taught them proper table manners and practical etiquette, such as how to use forks and knives, it was impressive to see them proactively asking questions about things they didn’t understand and
