CAS

What is CAS?

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a core element of the DP. It is a long-term commitment to trying new experiences, developing new skills, working with others, and reflecting on what has been learned. CAS is a chance for students to learn and grow outside of the classroom in any number of non-academic settings such as sports, arts, competitions, digital development, writing, and self-guided learning.
CAS is required for students to pass the diploma programme and is assessed as a collection of planning, evidence of completed experiences, and reflections of them. Students will also need to fulfill other criteria, including an in-depth project, covering various learning outcomes, and completing interviews with their advisor(s).

The Three Elements of CAS

The three elements Creativity, Activity, and Service are each defined as follows:
·Creativity: Exploring and extending ideas that lead to an original product or performance.
·Activity: Physical challenges that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
·Service: Collaborative and helpful engagement with the community that solves a real-life problem.
CAS enables students to grow and develop in a personal way. As each student has different skills, desires and weaknesses, the program will have different outcomes and benefits for different people. As such, there is no “right” way to do any part of CAS; the experiences, reflections and projects will vary wildly from person to person. It is up to the student to decide what they do, how they do it, and what they have learned from it.
