HiROSHIMA GLOBAL ACADEMY

Event

At our school, we launched the Harmony Beyond Borders project with the aim of fostering an environment where students and staff can learn about diverse cultures, recognize differences, and grow together in a spirit of “co-education” regardless of cultural background. As part of this initiative, an intercultural exchange workshop for faculty and staff was held on Wednesday, January 7, with Ms. Hamanaga and Mr. Masuda from the Hiroshima NPO Center as guest facilitators. Through interactive games, participants experienced moments when their own rules did not apply and when their thoughts could not be effectively communicated. This allowed them to gain a deeper, simulated understanding of the emotions felt by international students

On Saturday, January 24th, we held a “Shima-Oya Hosted Mochi-Making Experience” for G10 students (first-year high school students). In preparation for the event, many residents of the Okushi district, led by the island parents, assisted with numerous tasks such as moving the pestles and mortars and preparing the glutinous rice. Mochi pounding is an important Japanese traditional culture, praying for a bountiful harvest and wishing for the bonds of family and community. However, opportunities to experience it have become rare lately, and many students were experiencing mochi pounding for the first time. The students experienced the pleasant aroma of steamed glutinous rice and the challenge of pounding the rice with

On Wednesday, January 21st, during the third period, we held a “Table Manners Workshop” for Grade 11 students (second-year high school students). This workshop was held as a special class with the cooperation of Compass Group Japan, Inc., which regularly operates our school’s cafeteria. This was the first time for most of the students, and although they were a little nervous, they enjoyed an authentic course meal while learning unfamiliar table manners one by one. As the instructor carefully taught them proper table manners and practical etiquette, such as how to use forks and knives, it was impressive to see them proactively asking questions about things they didn’t understand and

A sex education lecture was held for first-year high school students. We invited Professor Yoko Ueno from the Nursing Course, Department of Health and Welfare, Prefectural University of Hiroshima, who spoke on the theme “Well-being for You and Me: Sexual Violence and Dating DV.” The lecture provided students with a clear understanding of the definition, types, and psychological aspects of dating violence (DV), and emphasized the importance of empathy and respect for others. It also offered an opportunity for each student to reflect on how they should act to help prevent dating DV.    For G11 high school students, she spoke on the theme “Well-being for you and Me: Sexually Transmitted infections.”

Our school recently hosted a special outreach lesson on electron microscopy, welcoming instructors from JEOL Ltd. During the session, students learned about the principles and applications of electron microscopes through an engaging and easy-to-understand lecture. In the hands-on portion, students had the opportunity to operate an electron microscope themselves. They observed fascinating microstructures such as an ant’s body, animal hair, and microorganisms that are normally invisible to the human eye. As the highly detailed images appeared on the screen, students reacted with excitement and amazement, carefully manipulating the equipment while discovering an entirely new world. This invaluable experience allowed students to interact directly with professional scientific instruments, fostering a deeper

On Wednesday, June 25, a group of students from Stanford University visited Hiroshima Global Academy and took part in meaningful interactions with our students. During their visit, our students asked the Stanford guests questions about their university life and studies, while also answering questions posed by the visitors. They also had the opportunity to share what they have been learning at school and received valuable advice and encouragement in return. This two-way exchange created an engaging and friendly atmosphere. After the discussion, they shared lunch together, further deepening their connections through casual conversation. Although some were initially nervous, they gradually opened and began discussing a wide range of topics —
