On Saturday, April 6, we held an entrance ceremony for 40 junior high school students and 41 high school students. Although it had been raining heavily until a few days before, the day of the ceremony was blessed with fine weather, and the buds on the cherry blossoms trees were swelling even more. In his address, Principal Fukushima expressed his expectations for the new students to acquire the ability to cooperate with others and play an active role on the global stage, even in this complex world in which we live. In their pledges, two representative students pledged their future growth and cooperation with their peers. In the afternoon, the

On April 5 (Fri.), we held the arrival ceremony for the 2024 school year and the opening ceremony for the first semester. At the arrival ceremony, we welcomed 14 new teachers, marking a fresh start for HiGA’s 6th year. The opening ceremony also marked the return of the current students to HiGA after a three-week spring break, bringing the school back to life. In his opening remarks,  Principal Fukushima reminded the students of the first and second cohort, who have grown up through trial and error since the school’s opening, and encouraged them to be even more active in the future. The third part of the Antarctic expedition! Very specialized research is being conducted daily in Antarctica! ——————- The Antarctic Regional Observation Expedition uses the latest equipment to realize observations in places where people have yet to set foot. I had never seen such equipment before, including an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) to collect mud from the ocean floor and a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) to penetrate the ground with, an observation device containing sensors such as a seismograph and GPS. These new instruments and technologies are great, but the observers who are passionate about “exploring the truth of unexplored places” are really cool, aren’t they? My view of the world

The second part of the Antarctic expedition! It seems that observation activities have finally begun. ——————- The 2024 Antarctic Regional Observation Expedition has begun! The observation expedition has teams that clarify the ecosystem of the Antarctic region and investigate changes in the ecosystem. This time, I went with the Fish team to fish for gizzard fish, and with the Biological Monitoring team to observe mosses and lichens in the Antarctic Special Protection Area. I was overwhelmed by the wilderness of the Antarctic region and the strength of organisms living in such a harsh environment. We had the luxury of spending time doing activities while having a researcher explain about the

As the name suggests, the main role of the JARE is to observe and set up in the Antarctic region, but during the voyage from Australia to Antarctic, we also conduct water sampling surveys and monitor the structure and route of the Shirase. During the voyage, helicopter boarding training for observations and a rice cake pounding contest were also held on

During the closing ceremony, Principal Fukushima reflected on the second semester and gave advice to the students, who are busy with their daily activities, on how to deal with “capacity overload(the state in which a load exceeds one’s capacity)” encouraging them to “Make an effort to gradually increase your capacity and control it well so that it does not become overcapacity.” He also concluded the second semester by telling them to say to their parents, “Thank you” from the bottom of their heart for their daily support, and to come back to school on the day they return to

As part of the Kakehashi Project (U.S.A.), an international exchange program promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, students from Hayfield Secondary School in the U.S.A., which our students visited in February this year, came to our school and enjoyed the one-day exchange program with our students in each grade. In the Japanese class for G10 (the 1st year high school) students, they chose their favorite words and made original uchiwa (Japanese fans) using calligraphy brushes. In the lunch break time, Hayfield students introduced their school in Japanese to G11 (the 2nd year high school) students, and the students of both schools danced together.  In addition, they had
